Today English is the official language of international conferences, and
most of the important publications in science and technology now appear in
English. Researchers must read English-language journals and books to keep
up with advances in their fields. Over twenty percent of the world’s
population speaks Chinese, but China is still a developing country and few
researchers outside of China will understand a scientific publication written
in Chinese. While this may not be the case in the twenty-first century, for
now, the researcher who wishes to reach a wide readership must publish in
English. Therefore, learning how to write a manuscript in English has
become part of the researcher’s task.
Writing in English can be difficult even for someone who grew up
speaking the language, and even more so for anyone who learns it as a
foreign language. English derives from many cultures and is constantly
evolving. As a result, its grammatical rules are many and complex. We
Asians face an additional challenge not shared by our European
counterparts: Most Asian dialects, Chinese and Japanese included, do not
belong to the same language family as English. There are grammatical constructs
that have no corresponding forms in Chinese or Japanese. The task
is not merely to translate words, but to understand and use foreign concepts
of syntax as well.
Consider the article the, which has no grammatical equivalent in
Chinese. Knowing when to use it before a noun is intuitive for an Englishspeaking
writer, but quite tricky for the Chinese. Other examples are
prepositions such as at, in, and with. These afso have no equivalents in
Chinese, which can make usage especially difficult to master. Then there is
the plural form of nouns. The European writer is used to seeing both
singular and plural nouns in his or her own language, and can easily deal
with these forms in English. In Chinese, however, a noun has the sameform for both the singular and plural cases. It requires extra vigilance on the
part of the writer to be certain of using the correct form in an Enalish
sentence.
Such difficulties are by no means insurmountable. With practice, plus
attention to the particular challenges faced by the Asian scholar, any of you
should be able to write a scientific paper in English that is concise and lucid
as well as grammatically correct, even if your vocabulary and understanding
of English usage are limited.
There are already many excellent texts on scientific writing in English.
Why, then, would an author whose first language is Chinese write another
book on the subject? As an author in English for over forty years, I
understand the unique writing challenge that we Asians face. This book
discusses the styie and convention used in scientific publications and is
written on a level that can be understood by researchers who learned English
as a second language. Rarely will a dictionary be needed. It assumes,
however, that the reader can already write grammatically correct Engfish
and avoid such mistakes as the following:This book is divided into five parts. Part I deals with the most typical
syntax errors. It discusses choice of words, sentence structure and, briefly,
the linkage between sentences in paragraphs. Part 11, the major part of this
book, discusses how to plan a manuscript. It covers the choice of an
informative and attractive title and the composition of an abstract (a minipaper
by itself), followed by the standard format of a scientific manuscript:
introduction, materials and methods, results, and discussion. Part 111
explains how to submit a manuscript to a journal and the process of
acceptance/rejection and revision of the paper. Part IV discusses the
preparation of a poster and some suggestions on oral presentations. In the
appendices are the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry
recommendations on symbols and terminology for quantities and units, and
also some common physical and chemical quantities and standard
biochemical abbreviations. I find these to be useful reference materials whenwriting a biochemistry manuscript. Authors in other fields can compile
appendices relevant to their own subjects.
The reader who wishes to study scientific writing in more detail is
encouraged to read two recent publications: Essentials of Writing Biomedical
Research Papers by Mini Zeiger (McGraw-Hill, 1991)’ and A Reseurcher’s
Guide to Scientific and Medical ~llustrations by Mary Helen Briscoe
(Springer-Verlag, 1990). Both books are well regarded and have been
translated into Japanese. Incidentally, both authors were associated with the
Cardiovascular Research Institute, as I was. Ms. Zeiger and I took Dr.
Comroe’s course together and Ms. Briscoe helped me prepare numerous
illustrations during my tenure at the Institute.
For general writing, I recommend The Elements of Sfyte by William
Strunk. This is an easy-to-use, classic text that many English teachers
consider indispensable. It is, however, somewhat dated in that it
recommends using he to represent men and women alike. I prefer using he
or she, his or her, etc. unless it makes the text too unwieldy.
One final recommendation: Do try to think in English when you write
a manuscript in English. Text that is translated from one language into
another often sounds awkward. It may be difficult to put your thoughts into
English, but you will gain facility with practice. You are also advised not
to become overly reliant on this or any other writing guide. In the words of
Confucius, “Better to have no books than to trust them completely.” There
is no substitute for practicing a language and developing an ear for its
nuances. Only in this way can you master your own scientific writing in
English.

Transistor Organik Berukuran Molekul

Transistor memiliki dua fungsi dasar: sebagai saklar dan penguat signal listrik. Transistor banyak digunakan dalam barang-barang elektronik, misalnya komputer. Sekarang transistor terbuat dari kristal silikon, suatu bahan semikonduktor yang di alam terdapat dalam bentuk dioksidanya (SiO2). Miniaturisasi transistor (dengan memampatkan atom-atom silikonnya) dilakukan untuk menambah jumlah transistor dalam cip prosesor komputer dengan tujuan meningkatkan kecepatan cip tersebut.
Miniaturisasi ini tidak dapat dilakukan terus-menerus tanpa batas karena transistor silikon memiliki batasan fisik (tidak dapat diperkecil lagi). Keadaan ini diskenariokan oleh kalangan ilmuwan terjadi pada satu dekade mendatang. Untuk mengantisipasinya, para ilmuwan berlomba menemukan bahan alternatif silikon dan teknik baru pembuatan transistor.
Beberapa penelitian itu bertujuan membuat transistor berukuran-satu molekul (single molecule-sized transistor) yaitu sebuah molekul tunggal yang dapat berfungsi sebagai transistor dengan kemampuan lebih hebat dan ukuran yang lebih kecil daripada transistor sekarang. Penelitian ke arah itu ditunjang oleh berkembangnya teknologi nano (nanotechnology) yang dapat mengontrol dan memanipulasi bahan pada skala atomik.
Salah satu kendala teknis pembuatan transistor berukuran-satu molekul adalah pembuatan elektroda-elektroda yang hanya dipisahkan oleh satu molekul. Namun, tanda-tanda ke arah itu sudah mulai tampak ketika tim peneliti dari Lucent Technologies Bell Labs AS yang dipimpin oleh Hendrik Schon berhasil membuat transistor organik berukuran-molekul (molecule-sized transistor). Bahan semikonduktor organik yang di-gunakan adalah tiol. Temuan mereka tersebut dipublikasikan dalam majalah ilmiah bergengsi Nature pada tanggal 18 Oktober 2001.
Berbeda dengan transistor sekarang yang dibuat dengan teknik litografi yang kompleks, transistor organik ini dibuat dengan cara yang lebih sederhana. Menurut Zhenan Bao, kimiawan tim ini, larutan tiol yang disiapkan dalam sebuah tabung reaksi dituangkan pada lapisan elektroda emas. Molekul-molekul tiol bergabung sendiri (self-assembled) membentuk sebuah deretan yang melekat pada dinding silikon. Satu deretan berjumlah sekitar seribu molekul tiol. Selanjutnya elektroda emas lain ditempatkan di atas deretan molekul tersebut. Ukuran channel (jarak kedua elektrodanya) sekitar 1-2 nanometer (1 nanometer=10-9 meter), bandingkan dengan transistor dalam prosesor Pentium 4 yang berukuran 180 nanometer. Teknik pembuatan yang digunakan oleh tim peneliti tersebut, menurut Profesor Paul Weiss, pakar elektronika dari Universitas Negeri Pennsylvania, adalah teknik yang indah, sederhana, dan cerdas.
Dari bukti percobaan tim peneliti ini, fungsi dasar sebuah transistor telah terpenuhi oleh transistor organik tersebut. Ketika arus listrik dilewatkan pada elektroda emas dan tegangan 1 volt diaplikasikan pada dinding silikonnya, mereka memperoleh penguatan arus ke luar sebesar sepuluh ribu kali. Selain itu, dengan transistor organik ini mereka juga membuat sebuah prototipe voltage inverter (saklar) yaitu sebuah sirkuit elektronik yang umumnya digunakan dalam cip untuk membalikan keadaan “0″ menjadi “1″ atau sebaliknya.
Era elektronika molekuler
Penemuan transistor organik berukuran-molekul telah membuka tabir pembuatan transistor berukuran-satu molekul. Selain itu, dengan dibuatnya prototipe voltage inverter dari transistor organik ini, jalan menuju era elektronika molekuler (era di mana sekumpulan molekul dapat berfungsi sebagai komponen-komponen elektronika) telah terbuka. Dengan komponen dari molekul, diharapkan tercipta produk-produk elektronik yang hebat, kecil, dan murah.
Namun, para peneliti itu belum bisa menjawab kapan era tersebut berlangsung. Perlu penelitian-penelitian lebih lanjut. Kiranya tidak berlebihan apa yang diterka fisikawan kondang Richard Feynman pada tahun 1959: pada saatnya nanti manusia akan mampu membuat peralatan dari molekul-molekul, akan terwujud.
Orde mikro (m) dalam satuan menunjukkan nilai sepersejuta (10-6). Satu mikrometer (1mm) misalnya, nilainya sama dengan sepersejuta meter (10-6 m). Sedang nano (n) menunjukkan nilai seper satu milyar (10-9). Satu nano gram (1 ng) nilainya sama dengan seper satu milyar gram (10-9 g). Orde mikro adalah 1000 kali lebih besar dibandingkan orde nano, atau sebaliknya orde nano adalah seperseribu dari orde mikro.
Kalau dalam dunia elektronika kita mengenal komponen yang disebut mikrochip, berarti di dalam chip elektronik itu terdapat ribuan bahkan jutaan komponen renik berorde mikro. Jika teknologi elektronika kini mulai bergeser dari mikroelektronika ke nanoelektronika, hal ini berarti bahwa komponen-komponen elektronik yang digunakan berode nano atau setingkat molekuler, bagian terkecil dari suatu materi. Berarti pula seribu kali lebih kecil dibandingkan ukuran komponen yang ada dalam mikrochip saat ini.
Sekitar tahun 1920-an, lahir konsep baru di beberapa pusat penelitian fisika di Heidelberg, Gottingen, dan Kopenhagen. Konsep baru tersebut adalah kuantum mekanika atau kuantum fisika yang semula dipelopori oleh Max Planck dan Albert Einstein, kemudian dilanjutkan oleh ilmuwan seperti Niels Bohr, Schrodinger, Max Born, Samuel A. Goudsmith, Heisenberg dan lain-lain. Konsep ini secara fundamental mengubah prinsip kontinuitas energi menjadi konsep diskrit yang benar-benar mengubah fikiran yang sudah berjalan lebih dari satu abad. Sisi lain yang tak kalah mengejutkan sebagai akibat lahirnya konsep kuantum in adalah lahirnya fisika zat padat oleh F. Seitz dan fisika semikonduktor oleh J. Bardeen di Amerika Serikat, W.B. Sockley di Inggris dan Love di Rusia pada tahun 1940.
Kemajuan riset dalam bidang fisika telah mengantarkan para fisikawan dapat meneliti dan mempelajari berbagai sifat kelistrikan zat padat. Dari penelitian ini telah ditemukan bahan semikonduktor yang mempunyai sifat listrik antara konduktor dan isolator. Penemuan bahan semikonduktor kemudian disusul dengan penemuan komponen elektronik yang disebut transistor. Dalam perjalanan berikutnya, transistor tidak hanya mengubah secara mencolok berbagai aspek kehidupan moderen, tetapi transistor tergolong salah satu dari beberapa penemuan moderen yang memajukan teknologi dengan biaya rendah.
Transistor dapat dihubungkan pada rangkaian elektronik sebagai komponen terpisah atau dalam bentuk terpadu pada suatu chip. Pada tahun 1958, insinyur di dua perusahaan elektronik, Kilby (Texas Instrument) dan Robert Noyce (Fairchild) telah memperkenalkan ide rangkaian terpadu monolitik yang dikenal dengan nama IC (integrated circuit). Kemajuan dalam bidang mikroelektronika ini tidak terlepas dari penemuan bahan semikonduktor maupun transistor. Komputer digital berkecepatan tinggi bisa terwujud berkat penggunaan transistor dalam IC yang merupakan kumpulan jutaan transistor renik yang menempati ruangan sangat kecik, yang semula hanya bisa ditempati oleh sebuah transistor saja.
Serba Kecil
Berbagai produk monumental dari perkembangan teknologi elektronika hadir di sekeliling kita. Namun teknologi mikroelektronika bukan sekedar menghadirkan produk, tetapi juga menampilkan produk itu dalam bentuk dan ukuran yang makin lama makin kecil dengan kemampuan kerja yang lebih tinggi. Dapat kita sebut disini sebagai contoh adalah munculnya komputer dan telepon seluler (ponsel).
Bentuk dini komputer moderen telah menggunakan elektronika pada rangkaian-rangkaian logika, memori dan sistim angka biner. Komputer yang dibuat oleh J. Presper Eckert dan John W. Mauchly itu diberi nama ABC (Atonosoff-Berry Computer) yang diperkenalkan pada tahun 1942. Komputer ini berukuran sangat besar, sebesar salah satu kamar di rumah kita, karena di dalamnya menggunakan 18 ribu tabung hampa.
Komputer elektronik generasi pertama yang diberi nama ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer) dikembangkan pada zaman Perang Dunia Kedua dan dipakai untuk menghitung tabel lintasan peluru dalam kegiatan militer. Pergeseran penting dalam elektronika telah terjadi pada akhir tahun 1940-an. Fungsi tabung-tabung elektronik saat itu mulai digantikan oleh transistor yang dibuat dari bahan semikonduktor. Penggunaan transistor yang mulai mencuat ke permukaan pada tahun ‘70-an ternyata memiliki beberapa kelebihan dibandingkan tabung hampa elektronik, antara lain :
* Transistor lebih sederhana sehingga dapat diproduksi dengan biaya lebih rendah.
* Transistor mengkonsumsi daya yang lebih rendah dibandingkan tabung hampa.
* Transistor dapat dioperasikan dalam keadaan dingin sehingga tidak perlu waktu untuk pemanasan.
* Ukuran transistor jauh lebih kecil dibandingkan tabung hampa.
* Daya tahan transistor lebih lama dan dapat mencapai beberapa dasawarsa.
* Transistor mempunyai daya tahan yang tinggi tehadap goncangan dan getaran.
Komputer generasi kedua yang telah menggunakan transistor adalah IBM 1401 yang diluncurkan oleh IBM pada tahun 1959. Sebelumnya juga telah diluncurkan IBM 701 pada tahun 1953 dan IBM 650 pada tahun 1954. Munculnya rangkaian terpadu atau integrated circuit (IC) ternyata telah menggusur dan mengakhiri riwayat keberadaan transistor. Komputer generasi ketiga adalah sistim 360 yang juga diluncurkan oleh IBM. Dalam komputer ini telah menggunakan IC, yang kemudian disusul dengan penggunaan large scale integration (LSI), dan selanjutnya very large scale integration (VLSI).
Pada tahun 1971, MITS Inc. meluncurkan ALTAIR, komputer mikro pertama yang menggunakan mikroprosesor Intel 8080. Komputer elektronik generasi berikutnya dikembangkan dengan menggunakan mikroprosesor yang makin renik sehingga secara fisik tampil dengan ukuran yang lebih kecil, namun dengan kecepatan kerja yang jauh lebih tinggi. Pengaruh kemajuan dalam teknologi elektronika ini demikian pesatnya mengubah wajah teknologi dalam bidang telekomunikasi dan automatisasi. Kemajuan dalam kedua bidang tersebut menyebabkan kontribusi sain ke dalam teknologi yang sangat besar, hampir mencapai 50 % dalam proses, sehingga teknologi semacam ini disebut High-Technology.
Selain pada komputer, kita juga bisa menyaksikan produk elektronik berupa ponsel yang proses miniaturisasinya seakan tak pernah berhenti, baik dalam aspek disain produknya maupun dalam aspek teknologi mikroelektronikanya. Sebagai anak kandung jagad mikroelektronika, kehadiran ponsel selalu mengikuti perkembangan teknologi mikroelektronika sehingga dapat tampil semakin mungil dan lebih multi fungsi dibandingkan generasi sebelumnya. Mengecilnya ponsel juga didukung oleh kemampuan para ahli dalam mengintegrasikan berbagai komponen baru yang ukurannya lebih kecil seperti mikrochip, yang kemampuannya selalu meningkat seiring dengan perjalanan waktu, dan semakin banyak fungsi yang dapat dijalankannya. Kini ponsel dengan berbagai fasilitas di dalamnya bisa ma**k ke dalam genggaman tangan.
Beralih ke Nanoteknologi
Perkembangan teknologi telah mengantarkan elektronika beralih dari orde mikro ke nano, yang berarti komponen elektronika kelak dapat dibuat dalam ukuran seribu kali lebih kecil dibandingkan generasi mikroelektronika sebelumnya. Pada awal tahun ‘90-an, Dr. Rohrer, penemu tunneling electron microscope dan pemenang hadiah Nobel bidang fisika tahun 1986, meramalkan bahwa mikroelektronika akan segera digantikan oleh nanoelektronika atau quantum dot. Sedang prof. Petel (president UCLA) meramalkan bahwa teknologi photonik akan menggantikan mikroelektronika di awal abad 21 ini. Feyman pada akhir tahun 1959 juga telah meramalkan akan hadirnya teknologi ini pada abad 21.
Para perintis nanoteknologi, suatu bidang baru teknologi miniatur, telah melihat kemungkinan penggunaan materi seukuran molekul untuk membuat komponen elektronika di masa depan. Dalam teknologi ini, ukuran sirkuit-sirkuit elektronika bisa jadi akan lebih kecil dibandingkan garis tengah potongan rambut atau bahkan seukuran dengan diameter sel darah manusia. Ukuran transistor di masa mendatang akan menjadi sangat kecil berskala atom yang disebut quantum dot.
Suatu ketika di bulam Mei 1988, dalam acara konferensi pengembangan antariksa di Pittsburg, K. Eric Drexler, pakar komputer dari Universitas Stanford, Amerika Serikat, mengemukakan tentang peluang pengembangan nanoteknologi di masa mendatang. Teknologi ini didasarkan pada kemampuan membuat perangkat elektronika dengan ketelitian setingkat ukuran atom. Drexler melihat bahwa makhluk hidup merupakan bukti adanya nanoteknologi. Dexler menguraikan kemungkinan pembuatan alat seukuran molekul yang proses kerjanya menyerupai molekul dari protein yang menjalankan fungsinya di dalam tubuh manusia. Drexler juga meramalkan bahwa zaman nanoteknologi akan dimulai mema**ki awal milenium tiga ini.
Dengan beralih ke nanoteknologi ini, tentu saja bidang yang paling banyak dipengaruhi adalah dalam disain komputer. Molekul-molekul akan dihimpun sehingga membentuk komponen elektronika yang mampu menjalankan tugas tertentu. Suatu terobosan besar akan terjadi bila para pakar dapat mewujudkan hal tersebut untuk membuat nanokomputer. Dengan komponen seukuran molekul, nanokomputer dapat ma**k ke dalam kotak seukuran satu mikrometer. Komputer ini mampu bekerja ratusan ribu kali lebih cepat dibandingkan mikrokomputer elektronik yang ada saat ini.
Penelitian yang kini sedang dilakukan oleh para pakar adalah mengembangkan metode penggantian dengan materi protein terhadap molekul, alat memori dan struktur lain yang kini ada di dalam komputer. Jacob Hanker, profesor rekayasa biomedik dari Universitas North Caroline, AS, telah berhasil melakukan percobaan membuat komponen semikonduktor dengan bahan-bahan biologis.
Mesin-mesin elektronik yang dinamai juga kuantum elektronik akan memiliki kemampuan mengolah pulsa yang jauh lebih besar. Kuantum teknologi ini akan mampu menerobos keterbatasan dan kejenuhan mikroelektronika yang ada saat ini. Perusahaan komputer IBM saat ini sedang merancang komputer dengan teknologi kuantum yang disebut kuantum komputer. Jika komputer tersebut telah mema**ki pasar, maka komputer generasi pendahulu yang masih menggunakan teknologi mikroelektronika bakal tersingkir. Teknologi baru ini bakal segera mengubah sistim jaringan telekomunikasi di awal milenium tiga ini. Teknologi ini juga akan membawa dunia kepada ciri-ciri baru dalam perangkat teknologinya, yaitu : berukuran sangat kecil, berkerapatan tinggi, kecepatan kerjanya tinggi, bermulti fungsi, memiliki kontrol yang serba automatik, hemat dalam konsumsi energi dan ramah lingkungan.
